****IDC expects RFID spending for the U.S. retail supply chain to grow from$91.5 million last year to nearly $1.3 billion in 2008. The security and privacyissues are far from being resolved, but wireless identification systems arenevertheless moving towards mass adoption. RFID tags may become the formof computing that reaches out and touches more people than anything everbefore--but not without controversy. Both Wal-Mart and the U.S. Military announced that their 100 largestcustomers would have to provide RFID tags on all pallets and cartons startingin January 2005 - and all suppliers must incorporate RFID tags by January2006. And RFID isn't the only identification technology out there. Theincreasingly ubiquitous 'Wi-Fi' (802.11) and Bluetooth technologies can bothbe used for tracking individuals - with or without their permission. This booklooks at the wireless security and privacy issues that are increasingly dominatingthe discussions of RFID.
