Principles of Management is the introductory course taken by most undergraduate business majors, usually in their sophomore or junior year. Almost every text/course is organized around the four functions of management:
planning, leading, organizing, and controlling (PLOC). What makes the texts different are their approach to the subject (principles vs. OB focused) and their strengths of coverage (high/strategic vs. low level/applied/skills).
Internal Differentiation: Jones is our 'most OB-ish' midlevel text (comparable to Robbins/Coulter, Schermerhorn), Kinicki/Williams (paperback) is our 'most accessible, student-focused text' (same level as Robbins/DeCenzo, Daft/Marcic, Griffin, and Certo/Certo). Gomez-Mejia is our 'most applied principles text,' Hill is our 'most uncluttered, challenging principles text' (same level as Daft), and Bateman as our 'most traditional principles text.'
Jones/George Story: Two highly respected researchers and experienced writers, Gareth Jones and Jennifer George have come together to write Contemporary Management. This comprehensive text surveys the theoretical underpinnings of modern management thought and research. Through a variety of real world examples from small, medium, and large companies it shows the reader how those ideas are used by practicing managers.

Managing Ethically exercise at the end of each chapter: Reflecting the increased importance of this topic in business today these new EOC exercises present students with an ethical scenario or dilemma and ask them, either individually or in a group, to think about the issues from an ethical perspective to understand the challenges facing practicing managers.
Rich and Relevant Examples: An important feature of our book is the way we use real-world examples and stories about managers and companies to drive home the applied lessons to students. Our reviewers were unanimous in their praise of the sheer range and depth of the rich, interesting examples we use to illustrate the chapter material and make it come alive. Moreover, unlike boxed material in other books, our boxes are seamlessly integrated into the text; they are an integral part of the learning experience, and not tacked on or isolated from the text itself. This is central to our pedagogical approach.
Video cases: A video case for every chapter is included at the end of the book. Each video case illustrates application of the relevant chapter concepts and has a corresponding video in DVD format. These cases feature timely and thought-provoking topics affecting the business environment, as well as profiles of successful businesses and managers.
